Great Egret

It was a hot day in Ormond, 80f, after my golf game I headed over to the Daytona race track to pick up one more ticket for the Budweiser shootout this coming Saturday. The track was real busy heading into the weekend which is the start of Speed Week leading up to the Daytona 500 Race. It is thought there will not be a room available for the 500.

Todays picture was taken on the St Johns River of a Great Egret, these big birds are all over the place if you look for them.

Plume hunters in the late 1800s and early 1900s reduced North American populations by more than 95 percent. The populations recovered after the birds were protected by law. No population is considered threatened, but the species is vulnerable to the loss of wetlands.

The Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society, one of the oldest environmental organizations in North America. Audubon was founded to protect birds from being killed for their feathers.
